Mark Cuban Wants To Fund A TikTok Alternative Using Bluesky’s Protocol
As TikTok faces an imminent ban in the United States, the social media landscape is bracing for a seismic shift. Friday morning, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the law prohibiting TikTok, set to go into effect this Sunday. For millions of TikTok users, this decision marks the end of an era—but tech entrepreneur Mark Cuban might have a solution on the horizon.
While ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, could potentially save the app by selling it to a government-approved buyer, no deal has been finalized. High-profile figures like Elon Musk and YouTuber MrBeast have shown interest in acquiring the app. But Cuban’s approach is entirely different: he’s calling for a new TikTok alternative, built on Bluesky’s innovative AT Protocol.

Cuban’s Vision for a TikTok Alternative
In a TikTok video, Cuban expressed his willingness to invest in a platform designed to fill the void left by TikTok. “There’s an app called Bluesky, and it’s built on the AT Protocol,” Cuban explained. “I would be open to investing in supporting anybody—or somebody who creates a TikTok replacement built on the AT Protocol. So if you’ve got that ability, let me know in the comments.”
Cuban’s enthusiasm for the AT Protocol lies in its extensibility. Unlike conventional social media platforms, apps built on this protocol are decentralized, meaning they can’t be easily bought or shut down. This quality could provide much-needed stability in a volatile social media landscape.
Bluesky’s Growing Influence
Bluesky is already making waves with its AT Protocol. The platform has around 27.6 million active users, with 17.6 million joining since September. One notable app leveraging Bluesky’s technology is Flashes, a photo and video sharing platform positioned as an Instagram alternative. The rapid growth of Bluesky demonstrates a growing appetite for decentralized social media solutions.
The Race for Alternatives
As TikTok users search for new platforms, apps like Lemon8 and RedNote have seen a surge in popularity. However, RedNote’s default language of Mandarin has prompted users to turn to language learning tools like Duolingo to navigate the app. The demand for user-friendly, innovative alternatives is clear.
Cuban’s call for a TikTok replacement represents a significant opportunity for developers to create a platform that combines TikTok’s creative energy with the resilience of decentralized technology. With millions of users ready to migrate, the race to develop a new social media giant is officially on.
